CAIRNS CITY GATEWAY TO REEF & RAINFOREST
Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. This multicultural coastal city is the tropical hub for world class tours and visitor experiences. Accommodation options range from backpackers and self-contained apartments to boutique hotels, luxury resorts and caravan parks. A vibrant mix of restaurants, cafes and bars showcase fresh local produce, while shopping precincts offer everything from souvenirs to fashion. Cairns Adventure Group is proudly based here. Our waterfront marine centre offers jet boat rides, river cruises and fishing boat hire. Our tours depart daily, taking guests to the rainforest, rivers, waterfalls, the Daintree and Cape Tribulation.
Where Is Cairns? – Cairns is more than 1,700km north of Brisbane and 2,613km from Sydney, by coastal road. Distance is no barrier, with easy access via an international and domestic airport, an international standard cruise liner terminal, and direct connections to the national highway and rail network. The city sits on a coastal plain framed by rainforest mountains and fronts the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef.
Welcome to Country – There are several Traditional Owners of the Cairns area. The Yidinji (pronounced Yidinjee) are the Traditional Custodians of the land including Cairns, south to the Russell River and west to parts of the Atherton Tablelands. The Gimuy Walubarra Yidinji were south of Cairns and surrounds and the Mandingalbay Yidinji were east of Cairns, across the Trinity Inlet to Yarrabah. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

CAIRNS CITY A RICH HISTORY
Cairns is a city shaped by resilience and powered by passionate people. Founded in 1876 and named after Sir William Wellington Cairns, it began as a small port supporting beche de mer fishing and nearby goldfields. By 1903 it was declared a town of 3,500 residents. As mining declined, sugar cane and agriculture drove the local economy. During World War II, the city was a strategic staging point for the Battle of the Coral Sea and Pacific campaign, with anti-aircraft gun sites established along the Esplanade, some still visible today. In the decades since, Cairns has transformed into one of Australia’s premier tourism hubs, providing direct access to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. Today, heritage buildings sit alongside a vibrant waterfront, and visitors from around the country and the world are drawn to explore our natural wonders. Cairns Adventure Group.
